[Rice] (Red rice)...Red is said to have the power to ward off evil and bad luck, and is meant to convey the message, "May you avoid misfortune and grow up healthy."

[Fish] (sea bream with head and tail attached)...It is considered auspicious because it sounds like a pun on the word "medetai (sea bream)" and because it looks red and white with its red skin and white flesh.

[Stew] ... Use auspicious ingredients such as lotus root, which has holes that allow you to see into the future, and bamboo shoots, which grow straight and strong.

[Soup] (Osuimono)...The meaning behind this is "May the baby's sucking power become stronger and he or she grow up healthily."

[Pickles]...Pickled octopus, a play on the word "tako" (octopus) meaning happiness.
